Quality Watch

The National Community Tax Coalition aims to constantly improve the skills and quality of professionals and volunteers in the free tax preparation field. One of our services is to provide rapid dissemination of information regarding particular quality issues that arise during a tax filing season. By monitoring tax sites and tax returns, the IRS and Coalition staff can address problems and questions arising for tax preparers.

The Q Word
This weekly Coalition newsletter addresses current quality issues based on observations at tax preparation sites. They are distributed during the tax filing season (January—April) only.

During the 2006 tax filing season, they addressed topics such as:

  • reviewing tax returns
  • talking to the client about the intake sheet to understand their situation
  • head of household filing status
  • overrides on TaxWise
  • sales tax deduction
  • reporting tax preparers
  • tip income
  • other income documents aside from form W-2
  • Uniform Definition of a Child

IRS Quality Alerts
During the tax filing season, the IRS publishes periodic Quality Alerts to relevant quality issues. These Quality Alerts can be found along with other material from the IRS in our Resource Library. They are also re-distributed by the Coalition through our listservs and newsletter.
